Cheerleaders Attend Camp

The Syracuse High School Varsity cheerleaders brought the spirit to a National Cheerleaders Association camp at Wesleyan University. Cheer coach Kelly Gobber accompanied the squad to the camp from June 19th-22nd in which the team brought home the top bragging rights and awards! During their time at camp they were able to master several new cheers and dances. The cheer squad was also able to participate in stunting practice for the first time ever. The squad worked together as a team and brought home several awards to recognize their hard work and dedication.

Throughout camp NCA staff members Nominated cheerleaders who display superior cheerleading skills in the following categories:  jumps, stunts, dance, motion technique, leadership, and tumbling.  The All-American nominees are eligible to perform at various NCA Special Events throughout the year. Team members who received a nomination were Brooke Bennett, Brynn Krieger, Layni Nannen, Madison Mueller, Nicole Stubbendick, Jada Cash, Teja Farley, Stormee Bradbury and Taylor Sherwin.

NCA staff recognized cheerleader, Dani Schutz, by presenting her the "Pin it Forward" Award for exuding the qualities of what cheerleading is truly about:  dedication, persistence, determination, and teamwork, to name a few. On the evening of the third day of camp, those who were "pinned" the previous evening, were asked to pass their award on to a cheerleader of another team. Madison Mueller was also chosen from different other schools to receive a pin.

The Syracuse cheerleaders worked hard together as a team through stunting classes and were able to master several new stunts. They also brought home for the first time the Stunt Safe award.

On the last day of cheer camp, teams participate in a final competition with a cheer that they have learned during the week.  For this last camp evaluation, the team can incorporate jumps, stunts, and showmanship into the NCA cheer they perform.  Overall technical and performance skills, as well as the ability to lead the crowd, are judged to select the winners.  Following the competition, the Syracuse Varsity Cheer Team proudly accepted Blue (Superior) Ribbons for their performance.

The Rockets were also awarded the Herkie Team Award.  The Herkie Team Award, named after cheerleading’s founder, Lawrence Herkimer, is given to the one team at camp who shows true team spirit, unity, and leadership throughout the entire week.

The Syracuse Varsity Cheerleaders were also awarded the NCA Spirit Award. This award is selected by the camp members as the team who exemplifies true team spirit!

To finish, the Syracuse Varsity brought home the much sought-after Spirit Stick.  The Spirit Stick is presented to the squads showing the most sincere spirit and enthusiasm throughout the entire week at camp!
