The biology students (10th graders) recently had a mini-unit on biotechnology where they learned about applications of biotechnology and even got to practice with micropipettes! They practiced moving very small volumes of fluid with the micropipettes and even made some micropipette art in the process. They also tested the pH of different water samples and connected it to ecology concepts such as ocean acidification.

Human Anatomy students have been learning about the skeletal system, joints, and joint movements, such as flexion, extension etc. They also learned about an application of these terms and learned how to wrap wrists to prevent hyperflexion or hyperextension. They chose to either use a bandage or athletic tape and pre-wrap. Some of the wrist wraps were a little snug, but they had a great time trying out this hands-on application of their learning!

The Advanced Biology class recently completed a 6 week lab involving the genetics of Drosophila melanogaster, or fruit flies. They crossed flies with red eyes and black eyes and based on the results of each generation they had to determine how the trait was inherited. Students had to learn how to identify male vs. female flies, anesthetize the flies, and count them based on their traits.

Two 6th grade teams represented Syracuse in a Rube Goldberg competition today at ESU 4.
The teams were tasked with using a complex series of simple machines to complete a simple task. Syracuse 1 took 1st place in their bracket with their series of simple machines that rung a bell. Syracuse 2 had two perfect runs for the judges with their contraption that three trash away.
