October 2020 Minutes

  • The meeting of the Board of Education, School District #27, Syracuse, Nebraska, as advertised in the Syracuse Journal-Democrat on October 16, 2020, was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Andy Burr.  Other board members in attendance included, Barry Janssen, Greg Mueller, Jay Weiler and Ed Zastera. Tyler Crownover was absent.

 

      Mr. Burr publicly stated to all in attendance that a current copy of the Nebraska Open Meetings Act was

      available for review and indicated the location of such copy in the room.

 

  • The Board examined the minutes of the meetings held September 15, 21 and October 13, 2020.  Motion by Ed Zastera, seconded by Greg Mueller, to approve the minutes of the meetings as printed.  Voting yes—Weiler, Zastera, Burr, Janssen and Mueller.  Voting no—none.  Motion carried 5 - 0. 

 

  • The Board examined the secretary and treasurer's reports for the month of October, 2020. Motion by Jay Weiler, seconded by Barry Janssen, to approve the secretary and treasurer’s reports for the month of October, 2020, as presented.  Voting yes—Zastera, Burr, Janssen, Mueller and Weiler.  Voting no—none.  Motion carried 5 - 0.

 

  • The Board examined the claims for the month of October, 2020. Motion by Greg Mueller, seconded by Ed Zastera, to approve the claims for the month of October, 2020, as presented.  Voting in favor of the motion—Burr, Janssen, Mueller, Weiler and Zastera. Voting against the motion—none.  Motion carried 5 - 0.

 

  • Motion by Greg Mueller, seconded by Jay Weiler to approve Policy 1361 – Title IX Grievance Procedure, on second reading.  Voting yes—Janssen, Mueller, Weiler, Zastera and Burr.  Voting against the motion—none.  Motion carried 5 - 0.

 

  • Mr. Buller shared information about the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) funds with the Board.  Because our district indicated in a learning profile plan last July that we needed 439 chromebooks to facilitate remote and flexible learning opportunities, we have been provided with a subsidy to pay for these devices.  The amount requested will total $159,629.  This is on top of the $54,841 the district previously received in CARES Act dollars.

 

  • The year-end reports for the 2019-2020 fiscal year were examined by the Board.  Motion by Jay Weiler, seconded by Greg Mueller to approve the year-end reports as presented for the 2019-2020 fiscal year.  Voting in favor of the motion—Mueller, Weiler, Zastera, Burr and Janssen.  Voting no--none.  Motion carried 5 - 0.

 

  • Motion by Jay Weiler, seconded by Barry Janssen to approve the negotiation committee of Greg Mueller, Andy Burr and Ed Zastera for the 2021-2022 negotiations process.  Voting in favor of the motion—Weiler, Zastera, Burr, Janssen and Mueller. Voting against—none.  Motion carried 5 – 0.

 

  • Mr. Buller and Mr. Royal gave an update of how Covid-19 was affecting school.  To date, there have been no students test positive in the elementary, two students test positive in the middle school and 11 students test positive in the high school.  The spread of the virus has been mostly community based and as a result, the school remains open to all students each day.

 

  • Motion by Greg Mueller, seconded by Ed Zastera to adjourn.  Voting yes—Zastera, Burr, Janssen, Mueller and Weiler.  Voting no—none.  Motion carried 5 - 0.  The meeting adjourned at 8:01 p.m.
